Plot on a dry, rocky, low ridge. The underlying Rome Formation yielded channery soils, more or less shaly. Shortleaf pine is characteristic of such low-elevation ridges and slopes. The community could be characterized as mixed oak-shortleaf pine forest of dry, argillaceous, oligotrophic soils. Below plot on sunny grassy old clearing grows Opuntia humifusa. Measured trees (dbh in cm.): Quercus alba (45.6), Pinus echinata (31.2), Quercus montana (47.5).
